To get a better idea of what time you might run in the hurdles without exhausting the athlete, running over a few hurdles in as close to competition conditions as possible and using this calculator may be the answer. The margin of error is now down to human reaction of the timer so 4-6 hurdles is the optimum amount to get a relatively accurate answer.

Make sure the hurdles are the correct spacing and the athlete is ready. Start the timer in the usual way after saying "On your marks, set, go!" The above calculations have been set out so that you press the lap timer (time the splits) of the athlete when you see that their head is directly over the hurdle as shown in the 3 images above. This is to insure that their positioning is such that their centre of mass is as directly above the hurdle as possible.
