Combined Events Training: Introduction

Combined Events: What are they?

Combined Events (CE) are a specialism in athletics where an athlete prepares for a specific combination of events in a given order. This is separate from multi-events (ME) where an athlete will train for multiple events where the competition format isn't in a particular order.

It is possible to be an ME athlete without being a CE athlete, but impossible to be a CE athlete without being a ME athlete.

An example: An athlete that trains for the 60m/100m/200m is a multi-event athlete. An athlete that trains for a Decathlon is a combined event athlete. An athlete who trains for sprint hurdles, long jump, shot put, high jump and the 800m is a multi-event athlete but an athlete that knows and appreciates how they appear in a pentathlon format is a combined event athlete.

There's many reasons to train for and compete in combined events. It is widely considered the best "overall athletic" development mode for youngsters wishing to succeed Athletics. It is also really good fun and super rewarding.
